Government of Canada Supports the Board of Montreal Museum Directors

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 28, 2005) - Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced $56,575 in funding for the Board of Montréal Museum Directors (BMMD). The funds will enable this organization to develop and diversify activities at Montréal museums.

"More and more Canadians are visiting museums," said Minister Frulla. "I have no doubt that this increase is, to a large degree, related to the enthusiasm shown by those responsible for developing new activities in Canadian museums. I am pleased to announce this funding to support the remarkable work done by the Board of Montréal Museum Directors."

The BMMD plans to carry out promotional projects aimed at raising awareness of the museum network both in Montréal and across Canada. The Board will also develop new projects and enhance existing activities, especially on Montréal Museums Day. Every year since 1986, Montreal Museums Day has been held on the last Sunday in May. It is a BMMD initiative, held to mark International Museums Day decreed by UNESCO.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Museums Assistance Program and through the Capacity Building Component of its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program. This component helps individual arts and heritage organizations improve their administrative, organizational, and financial structures

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
