Government of Canada Supports the Globalink Student Internship Program

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - July 7, 2010) - A $337,500 investment by the Government of Canada will support MITACS in expanding the successful 'Globalink' student internship program.

"Investments in initiatives such as this are crucial in strengthening Canada's international linkages, promoting our educational institutions, and helping to maintain British Columbia's leadership in leading-edge scientific research," said the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. "I know that our country will be showcased as the perfect environment for fostering new and emerging scientific ideas."

Funding will build on the success of the original Globalink pilot project by placing 49 students from India in three-month long internships at British Columbia universities. A survey after the initial pilot program indicated that 85 per cent of participants would be interested in returning to B.C. to pursue graduate work. As a result, the project will provide an excellent opportunity for B.C. to work toward addressing the shortage of PhDs and graduate students in the sciences, and will build crucial research links with leading international researchers.

"Every year, tens of thousands of future entrepreneurs and scientists from India travel abroad to countries like the U.S. or U.K. for graduate studies," said Arvind Gupta, Scientific Director of MITACS, a leading national research network that connects industry and academia through innovative programming. "Our message to international students is that Canada has world-class universities that provide superior education and innovative collaborative research opportunities with industry."

MITACS, a national research network with an office at the University of British Columbia, connects academia, industry and the public sector to develop cutting-edge tools to support the growth of Canada's knowledge-based economy. MITACS also facilitates connections with top researchers from around the world and provides training to the next generation of scientists and entrepreneurs.

Western Economic Diversification Canada works with the provinces, industry associations and communities to promote the development and diversification of the western economy, coordinates federal economic activities in the West and represents the interests of western Canadians in national decision making.
