Government of Canada Tapping World Ginseng Markets

DELHI, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 25, 2009) - The Government of Canada is helping to boost sales of Canadian ginseng in lucrative Asian markets including Hong Kong by supporting the promotional activities of the Ontario Ginseng Growers Association. Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, Diane Finley, made the announcement today on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.

"Buyers around the world want to bid on Canadian ginseng and we're working with farmers to maximize those international opportunities," said Minister Finley. "This investment will pay real dividends right here in Ontario as our farmers secure premium prices for their ginseng and continue to drive our local economy."

The Ontario Ginseng Growers Association, a non-profit organization of producers, will receive funding of $128,600 from the AgriMarketing Program under the Growing Forward framework. This funding will support their activities to implement a promotional campaign for Canadian ginseng in Hong Kong and develop a long term international strategy to develop markets and increase exports of Canadian ginseng.

The AgriMarketing program, with an $88 million budget over four years, is assisting producers and processors to increase exports of Canada's safe, high-quality world-class products around the world. The Program provides funding to develop and implement long term international strategy and undertake activities such as international market development, brand building and industry-to-industry trade advocacy. Launched on April 7, 2009, the AgriMarketing program is part of the Market and Trade Development program under Growing Forward.
