Government of Canada Upgrades Defence Infrastructure at 3 Wing Bagotville

BAGOTVILLE, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Sept. 9, 2010) - The Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Peter MacKay, and the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, announced a new infrastructure project today to upgrade facilities at 3 Wing Bagotville. Upgrades to this wing, which is responsible for the control and defence of North-American air space, entail an investment of $2.7 million, and will bring about economic benefits and job opportunities.

"This investment is one more example of the government's commitment to ensuring that 3 Wing has the infrastructure it needs while creating economic benefits at the local level," said Minister MacKay. "This shows yet again that the Canadian government's Canada First Defence Strategy produces concrete results for the Canadian Forces."

"3 Wing Bagotville provides multi-role, combat capable forces that support of the domestic and international roles of Canada's Air Force," explained Minister Blackburn. "The Government of Canada is proud to support the men and women in uniform at 3 Wing Bagotville with this investment."

The project consists in purchasing and installing prefabricated modular units in order to provide provisional spaces. This project will help remedy the lack of infrastructure at 3 Wing Bagotville, and will support the 1,300 military and 200 civilian personnel at the wing.

As the Canada First Defence Strategy explains, it is important to update and replace outdated defence infrastructure in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

The Government of Canada will conduct open, fair, transparent and competitive processes in order to award the contracts for the projects at 3 Wing Bagotville.

The Department of National Defence holds a large number of properties in Canada to support the Canadian Forces, including some 21,000 buildings, 2.25 million hectares of land, 5,500 km of roads and 3,000 km of water, storm and sewer pipes.
