Governments of Canada and New Brunswick Celebrate New Affordable Housing in Fredericton

FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - April 13, 2012) - The official opening of twelve new affordable rental housing units for persons with disabilities was held today in Fredericton. The project received more than $1.4 million in funding from the federal and provincial governments.

The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, Member of Parliament for Fredericton and Minister Responsible for New Brunswick, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and the Honourable Sue Stultz, New Brunswick Minister of Social Development and Minister Responsible for Housing, made the announcement.

"Our Government is dedicated to giving a hand-up to those in need in New Brunswick through these tough economic times," said Minister Ashfield. "Through projects like these, we are providing safe affordable housing to residents in our community, including seniors and families, while also creating jobs and stimulating our economy."

"With the opening of these new units, we are enhancing the quality of life of New Brunswickers and their families by investing in safe and affordable housing," said Social Development Minister Sue Stultz, who is also minister responsible for Seniors, Housing and Community Non-Profit Organizations. "Our government will continue to work to ensure that affordable housing is available for the long term and focused on the needs of New Brunswickers."

It was also announced at today's ceremony that more than 2350 units located across New Brunswick have received more than $ 37 million in federal and provincial funding under three different initiatives: Canada's Economic Action Plan, the 2009 Extension of the Canada - New Brunswick Affordable Housing Initiative and the Affordable Housing Trust.

The Government of Canada wants to ensure that Canadians on fixed incomes can live with independence and dignity and remain in their communities, close to family and friends. Canada's Economic Action Plan provided $475 million, over two years, to build new rental housing for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities. Overall, the Economic Action Plan included $2 billion for the construction of new and the renovation of existing social housing, plus $2 billion in low-cost loans to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure.

The Government of Canada, through CMHC, will invest more than $2 billion in housing this year. Of this amount, $1.7 billion will be spent in support of almost 615,000 households living in existing social housing. In New-Brunswick, this represents some 16,200 households. These investments are improving the quality of life for low-income Canadians and households living in existing social housing, including individuals who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness, seniors, persons with disabilities, recent immigrants and Aboriginal people.
