SUMMERSIDE, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND--(Marketwire - Dec. 5, 2011) - The Government of Canada joined the Province of Prince Edward Island today at the official opening of Rose Hill Place.

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue and Regional Minister for Prince Edward Island, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Prince Edward Island's Minister of Community Services and Seniors Valerie E. Docherty, made the announcement today in Summerside.

"I am delighted to see that construction is complete on this project," said Minister Shea. "The opening of Rose Hill Place brings more affordable housing to Summerside, allowing independent seniors to remain in the community, close to family and friends."

Rose Hill Place, located at 378 Pope Rd. in Summerside, is supported by $400,000 in Affordable Housing Trust capital funding. The 10-unit building includes seven one-bedroom units and three two-bedroom units.

"Rose Hill Place is one of the many examples of our government's commitment to providing Islanders with affordable housing options," said Minister Docherty. "As the new Minister Responsible for Seniors, I will continue to work closely with our federal partners to ensure projects such as this continue to better the lives of our Island seniors."

The provincial Department of Community Services and Seniors operates housing units across the province for families, seniors and persons with disabilities who require assistance finding affordable and appropriate homes. The Seniors' Housing program supports housing units in 35 communities across the province. Islanders aged 60 and older are eligible for assistance. The province partners with the Government of Canada to provide these enhancements to housing options on Prince Edward Island.
