Governments of Canada and Yukon Open New Affordable Housing for Families in Whitehorse

WHITEHORSE, YUKON--(Marketwire - Nov. 10, 2010) - The Honourable Daniel Lang, Senator (Yukon), on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with the Honourable Marian Horne, Minister of Justice and Minister Responsible for the Women's Directorate officially opened the Whitehorse Affordable Housing project today.

The $7.5 million federal contribution to the project comes through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the government's plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs during the global recession. Recognizing the distinctive needs of the North, Canada's Economic Action Plan provides $200 million, over two years, including $50 million for Yukon, to support the renovation and the construction of new social housing units. Overall, the Economic Action Plan includes $2 billion for the construction of new and the renovation of existing social housing, plus up to $2 billion in low-cost loans to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure.

"We are pleased to have played a role in bringing this new housing development to Whitehorse with funding through Canada's Economic Action Plan," said Senator Lang. "In the territories and throughout the country, the Action Plan is allowing us to build more places like this one, which means safe and affordable housing for more families who need it."

"This super-green housing will help address the largest identified housing gap by providing safe, secure and affordable housing for 30 lone parent families," Minister Responsible for Women's Director Marian C. Horne said. "Programming will be an important part of this facility and residents will be supported by on-site staff to develop a vibrant community. We are also pleased that this project was completed on time and within budget."

The 30-unit apartment-style project is located on Selkirk Street in Whitehorse. The two-storey wood frame construction features SuperGreen energy efficiency standards and Accommodating Home standards for a barrier-free living environment. The Government of Yukon is contributing $500,000 to the project.

Canada's Economic Action Plan builds on the Government of Canada's commitment in 2008 of more than $1.9 billion, over five years, to improve and build new affordable housing and help the homeless.
