Governor General to Attend State Funeral of Former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - March 26, 2015) - At the request of the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, and on behalf of all Canadians, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will pay his respects to the founding father and former prime minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew during a lying-in-State at the Singapore Parliament on Saturday, March 28, and at the State funeral being held at the Cultural Centre of the National University of Singapore on Sunday, March 29, 2015.

"Lee Kuan Yew will be remembered as a visionary and as a great statesman. On Singapore becoming independent in 1965, he led the transformation of the city state into one of the world's most prosperous nations. As part of my official duties as governor general, I had the privilege of conducting a State visit to this beautiful country in November 2011. Now, I return with sorrow to pay my last respects to the founding father of this great country," said His Excellency.
