Governor General Delivered the Opening Address at the Conference of the Americas on International Education

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL--(Marketwire - April 26, 2012) - Today, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston concluded their two-day visit to Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. The Governor General showcased Canada's educational excellence in his opening address at the Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE), where he led an impressive delegation of 30 university presidents from the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC).

He explained how Canada is a world leader in education to the hundreds of participants from five continents and over 35 countries in attendance. He also encouraged further international exchanges in education through the "Diplomacy of Knowledge":

"What is the diplomacy of knowledge? It's our ability and willingness to work together and share the knowledge we uncover and refine across disciplines and across borders to improve the human condition together," said His Excellency. "While it operates on many geographic levels-local, regional and national-I believe it's particularly potent when we cross international borders and cultivate closer contacts and interactions among teachers, researchers, students and schools from different countries. Brazil's Science Without Borders program is a good example," he added. "We must study together-face-to-face. Research together. Travel together. Socialize together. Talk informally together. Only then can we unleash the true power of the diplomacy of knowledge."

About the Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE)

The CAIE aims to promote an inter-American exchange space for leaders of higher education institutions, namely to discuss priority issues concerning the internationalization of higher education, as well as its quality management. This event provides a dynamic forum where the different parties involved may explore the benefits of mutual collaboration. The conference serves as pivotal event for the continual development of academic collaboration in the hemisphere. This is the second edition of the conference; the first edition was held in Calgary, in 2010.

Canada-Brazil linkages in education, innovation and commerce

During his stay in Rio de Janeiro, the Governor General and some members of the Canadian delegation met with Mr. Sérgio Cabral Filho, Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro. He also addressed the Pontifícia Universidade Católica and the AUCC Canada-Brazil University Presidents' Round Table, focussing on the importance of partnerships and the internationalization of education to attain a global and interconnected world.

Finally, His Excellency met with senior representatives of Canadian companies operating in Brazil to discuss their achievements, as well as plans for and challenges of doing business in Brazil and in Canada.

Their Excellencies will continue their official visit to Brazil in São Paulo from April 26 to 28, 2012. The Governor General will underscore the essence of establishing partnerships in the pursuit of innovation.

Throughout the visit to Brazil, His Excellency is joined by the Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs); the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology) (Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario); parliamentarians; and Canadian delegates who are enhancing people-to-people ties with their Brazilian counterparts.
