Governor General in Kuujjuaq

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 31, 2009) - Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond, accompanied by their daughter Marie-Eden, will arrive this evening in Kuujjuaq for a visit in Nunavik in Quebec's Arctic region.

Arrival of Their Excellencies in Kuujjuaq this evening

Upon their arrival, Their Excellencies and Marie-Eden will be welcomed by His Worship Larry Watt, Mayor of Kuujjuaq, and Mr. Pita Aamati, President of Makivik Corporation. The Governor General will then proceed with the inspection of the Canadian Rangers and Junior Rangers honour guard.

Dinner in honour of Their Excellencies' visit

Members of Makivik Corporation and staff from the Auberge Kuujjuaq will host a dinner in honour of Their Excellencies' visit to Kuujjuaq. On this occasion, the Governor General will deliver a speech.

Makivik is the development corporation mandated to manage the heritage funds of the Inuit of Nunavik, as outlined in the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. Makivik's role includes administering and investing the funds, as well as promoting economic growth through the assistance of new businesses launched by the Inuit in Nunavik. It also promotes the preservation of Inuit culture and language, as well as the health, welfare, relief of poverty, and education of the Inuit in their communities.

Their Excellencies will meet with the Mayor of Kuujjuaq, Makivik board members and other prominent community leaders to discuss issues, challenges and success stories related to the community.

Youth Dialogue

Their Excellencies will host a Youth Dialogue in Kuujjuaq on the issues youth are facing in Nunavik and the ways in which they are addressing such challenges. Panellists and youth from the community will participate in the discussion.
