Canada-Brazil linkages in education, innovation and commerce

During his stay in Brasilia, His Excellency discussed partnerships on innovation, science and technology and education with Mr. Marco Antônio Raupp, Brazilian Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation; Mr. Aloízio Mercadante Oliva, Brazilian Minister of Education; and with members of the Brazilian Economic and Social Development Council-an advisory council to the presidency. The Governor General participated in exchanges about the opportunities of and challenges in doing business in Brazil and Canada with senior representatives of Canadian and Brazilian companies during networking meetings.

He conveyed, via video conference, the importance of using technology to build smarter, more caring and democratic societies in his opening address at the launch of the Canadian Digital Media Network Canada 3.0 Digital Media Forum, held in Stratford, Ontario. A Brazilian delegation was in attendance at the event as part of an initiative under the Canada-Brazil Science, Technology, and Innovation Agreement.

The Governor General also engaged with the Brazilian community. He took part in a discussion with former participants in the Mulheres Mil (1 000 women) Project, which benefits from the work of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges with support from the Canadian International Development Agency. Through their testimonials, he witnessed how this social and education program has allowed disadvantaged women in northeastern and northern regions of Brazil to reach their potential for employability, and subsequently improve their lives and the lives of their families and communities. In addition, Their Excellencies also met with Luiza Rabello, a 17-year-old Brazilian exchange student, to discuss her six-month studying experience at a high school in Barrie, Ontario.

Their Excellencies are continuing their official visit to Brazil in Rio de Janeiro from April 24 to 26, 2012. The Governor General will deliver the opening address at the Conference of the Americas on International Education, an international forum.
