Media Advisory: Governor General to Honour Aboriginal Veterans on National Aboriginal Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 17, 2011) - On the occasion of National Aboriginal Day, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will participate in the 10th annual Ceremony of Remembrance at the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument, located in Ottawa's Confederation Park, on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at 11 a.m.

The monument and commemorative ceremony honour the contributions of thousands of Aboriginal veterans who gave their lives for their country, and all those who have served throughout Canada's military history.

The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson unveiled the monument 10 years ago, on June 21, 2001. "As this monument commemorates specific battles and campaigns, it also honours the eternal spiritual elements that are so essential to the culture of Aboriginal peoples," Ms. Clarkson said during the unveiling. "Its message of respect and honour will travel in the four directions and be heard by all who listen. It is a message of remembrance; it is a Calling Home."

Media wishing to cover the event are asked to confirm their attendance with Veterans Affairs Canada and must arrive on the west side of Confederation Park no later than 10:45 a.m.
