Governor General to Open Montreal Millennium Summit

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 14, 2009) - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will deliver the opening address at the Montreal Millennium Summit on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at 9 a.m.

Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond will also do a number of other activities during their two-day visit to Montreal, including the opening of the 25th PanAfrica Film Festival.

Montreal Millennium Summit

The Governor General will deliver the opening address of the summit's public programming. The Montreal Millennium Summit's mission is to initiate profound changes to overcome the many substantial challenges of this century, as defined by the United Nations in September 2000: reduce poverty, improve health, and promote peace, human rights, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. Her Excellency will also attend other portions of the conference.

Visit to DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art

DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art is a new exhibition space housed in a renovated historic building in the heart of Old Montreal. Privately owned, the foundation is a new permanent location for contemporary art exhibitions and has free admission. Their Excellencies will tour the facilities, inaugurated in 2007, and will meet with Phoebe Greenberg, DHC/ART's founder.

Visit to the Canadian Centre for Architecture

Their Excellencies will visit the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), accompanied by Phyllis Lambert, the centre's founder. The CCA is an international research centre and museum founded on the conviction that architecture is a public concern. Over the years it has increased public awareness of the role of architecture in society, promoted scholarly research in the field, and stimulated innovation in design practice. The CCA has become a leading voice in advancing knowledge, promoting public understanding, and widening thought and debate on the art of architecture, its history, theory, practice, and role in today's society.

Opening of the 25th PanAfrica Film Festival

The Governor General will deliver a speech during the opening of the festival. The PanAfrica Film Festival showcases the best and brightest films from Africa and the Creole countries. Over 12,000 people attend the ten-day event each year and see over a hundred films from forty different countries. The screenings are followed by discussion groups and forums with filmmakers, directors and journalists from Canada, Africa and Europe. The Governor General is patron of honour of this event.
