Governor General Unveils Donor Wall Honouring 125 Years of Art Donations to the National Gallery

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 20, 2005) - Under the patronage of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, the National Gallery of Canada and its Foundation proceeded today with the unveiling of a Donor Wall that recognizes 125 years of art donations.

This Donor Wall pays tribute to more than 1,500 individuals, foundations and corporations that have donated one or more works of art to the Gallery since it was founded in 1880. This list also includes the names of donors who contributed to the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography's collection and to the NGC's Library throughout the years.

"These donors played a determining role in the Gallery's history. Thanks to a tradition of generosity that has been maintained since the Gallery's inception in 1880, our institution was able to enrich its national collection and elevate itself to the ranks of one of the most respected art institutions in the world," said Pierre Theberge, Director of the National Gallery.

The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of the Governor General of Canada, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson. "We are extremely proud to have been able to count on the support of Ms. Clarkson for this occasion. We are particularly honoured that this marks one of her last events as Governor General, since her tenure will come to an end in a few days," said Mr. Theberge. "I am pleased to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to Ms. Clarkson for her exceptional commitment throughout her tenure, not only towards the National Gallery of Canada but also towards the entire cultural sector."

This donor wall represents the Foundation's first step in a series of projects that will take place during the Gallery's 125th anniversary year to recognize the numerous partners and collaborators who have shown their commitment to the Gallery since its inception.
