Governor General Visits CIDA Projects in One of Guatemala's Poorest Indigenous Regions

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 11, 2009) -

Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and her husband, Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond, went to San Juan La Laguna, in Guatemala, to visit a coffee farm co-operative and a branch of the Association of Women Weavers, two rural economic development projects supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Their Excellencies, along with Ms. Elana Yojcom Upján, Departmental Governor of Sololá, and Mr. Flavio Jose Yojcom Garcia, Mayor of San Juan La Laguna, met with Canadian and Guatemalan workers who are committed to improving living conditions and income generation in the Department of Sololá, one of Guatemala's poorest Indigenous regions. They also recognized the incredible humanitarian work being accomplished by CIDA.
