Graham Gunn Downs the Field at the 2006 BreconRidge Canadian PGA Championship

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - July 29, 2006) - With his wife caddying and members of his club following, Ottawa-area professional Graham Gunn overcame a two-stroke penalty with a four birdies down the stretch to capture the 2006 BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors' Championship by two shots Saturday.

Graham Gunn, Head Professional at the nearby Carelton Golf & Yacht Club, capped his final-round 69 with 30-foot par-saving putt to edge defending champion Hocan Olsson of Otterburn Park, Que, who was watching from the fairway.

"To win this tournament in Ottawa in front of many friends and members from the club is truly amazing," said Gunn, who won the 2000 Canadian PGA Club Professional Championship which was also at a local course, Outaouais Golf Club in Rockland, Ont.

"This is such an incredible feeling to win my second Canadian PGA national title," said Gunn who shot a six-under par 210 total to win $8,100.

The drama on the 18th hole might have been avoided if Gunn did not incur a two-stroke penalty on the par-five 10th hole. After hitting the ball into a later-water hazard off the tee, Gunn dropped a new ball 20 yards back of where it entered. When he dropped his ball, it rolled forward on the ground. Assuming it was an illegal drop, Gunn picked up his ball and re-dropped. It was ruled that because his ball was not in the hazard, the first drop was correct. His mistake cost him two penalty strokes and he made a triple-bogey eight on the hole.

Gunn kept his composure and came right back to birdie the next hole, and made three more birdies on holes 13, 14 and 16. The hometown hero put an exclamation point on the victory when he got up and down for par after hitting his ball 15 yards over the 18th green.

"It was a life lesson getting those penalty strokes on No. 10," said Gunn, whose wife Vicky caddied for him for all three days. "I really gained some momentum after that error because there was no way I wanted to lose the tournament on a silly mistake like that."

Olsson, who entered the final round four shots back of leader David Bell of Windor, Ont., shot a final round one-under par 71 to finish alone in second with a 212 total. "I felt more excited than pressured all week and I'm pretty happy with a win and a second place finish in the last two years," said Olsson, Head Professional at Mount Bruno Country Club in St. Bruno, Que.

Champions Tour player Dave Barr of Westbank, B.C. shot 68 for the low round of the day to move up the leaderboard and finish tied for third with John Irwin of Summerside, P.E.I. Irwin shot a third consecutive one-under par 71 to finish at 213 with Barr.

Irwin added $2,610 to the $1,500 he picked up for winning the Super Senior Division (for players 60 years and older) a day earlier.

First- and second-round leader Bell struggled to a final-round 78 to finish fifth.

The $55,000 BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors' Championship is a three-day, 54-hole individual stroke-play competition open to Canadian PGA Professionals 50 and older. The Super Senior (60 and older) and Diamond (70 and older) divisions was contested over 36 holes on Thursday and Friday.
