Event to Showcase Top Wines From New Kosher Wine Guide Just Published by The Jewish Week

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - March 9, 2010) -  The Grand Wine Tasting will be held at the City Winery, a wine bar, restaurant, and winemaking facility on 155 Varick St. in Tribeca that produces more than 250 barrels of wine a year, over 35 of them kosher.

Pomegranate, the kosher gourmet grocery store based in Flatbush Brooklyn, will offer a half dozen complimentary spreads and crackers, including its popular hummus dip. "There's a demand for our dips," says owner Abraham Banda. Pomegranate, which as a supermarket is prohibited from selling liquor in New York State, sponsors a wine lecture every Monday evening at 7 pm that is led by a sommelier with expertise in kosher wine.

The Wine Tasting will be open to the public and will take place on Sunday, March 14, from 1-5pm. Over 500 consumers are expected to attend, along with many influential figures in the kosher wine industry.

On display and available for tasting will be the winners of the recent Top 18 Kosher Wine Competition, in the following categories:

  • Top 18 Wines Under $18
  • Top 18 Wines between $18 and $50
  • Top 18 Wines Over $50
  • Top 18 Red Wines
  • Top 18 White Wines
  • Top 18 Israeli Wines

A select group of New York sommeliers, restaurateurs and wine writers participated in the tasting and helped to create the inaugural list of top wines. They included Michael Dorf, owner of City Winery, Yossie Horwitz, author of a weekly kosher wine e-newsletter, Aron Ritter, president of the Kosher Wine Society, Ilan Tokayer, winemaker and OU Mashgiach, and Seth Warshaw, owner of ETC Steakhouse.
