Grandpa Jimmy's Scottish Bakery-National Allergen Alert and Its Correction Issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on December 2 & 3 2010 Respectively

GRAND BEND, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 9, 2010) - The Hosford family owners of Grandpa Jimmy's Scottish Bakery wish to apologize to our customers and the general public for not having our labeling system up to date, the component that triggered these alerts for a recall of some of our traditional fruit cakes. We hope the stigma of this alert will not damage your confidence in us.

We take food safety very seriously and are pro-active in dealing with inspectors and our customers in addressing their questions and concerns. For example in 2005 we eliminated all nuts except coconut and almonds from our products, we now have parents that visit us on a regular basis with severely allergen sensitive children who are confident enough to allow them enter our bakery and to purchase loose and unlabeled confectionery. The joy on these children faces makes us really proud and very conscious of our responsibility.

As we cooperated fully with the CFIA inspectors and provided them with all the information they requested and corrected the problem immediately, we are extremely disappointed that the CFIA got the first alert wrong and had to issue a second alert to correct their mistake, thus exposing us to a second wave of negative national TV & radio publicity at the same time we were on the airwaves advertizing our annual open house.

As the volume we sold, the historical background of the products (years marketed, previous complaints etc.) or the economic information was not sought it is difficult to understand how CFIA has a satisfactory risk assessment model to determine the economic impact negative national media reporting has on a small manufacturer.

We challenge the CFIA to produce an independent Risk Assessment Study comparing the potential consequences of our label infraction to the risk allergent sensitive people face in food distribution and eating establishments in Ontario every day, or to publish an apology.

Grandpa Jimmy's Scottish Bakery has been manufacturing and supplying the Celtic and Anglo Celtic communities of Canada, the US, visitors to Grand Bend and the general public with these products and a wide variety of other products for over 20 years. Our products have been exposed to scrutiny at international borders during that time without complaint.

We thank our customers for their support in the past and particularly at this time, we look forward to seeing you again before Christmas. If we do not see you we wish you a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous 2011. You are welcome to visit us at
