Grandparents' Support Essential for Working Parents

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 1, 2011) - The trend for working parents to turn to their parents for help with childcare is increasing as nursery-based childcare can be too expensive an option for many. According to gNappies, purveyor of the hybrid nappy, this can present a great opportunity to be eco-friendly. Whilst many parents can be reluctant to try non-disposable nappies because of the perceived burden on the child-carer, many grandparents have the time, patience and inclination to use eco-friendly nappies.

Given the choice, parents and grandparents would like to be more environmentally friendly, and one of the ways to do this is help reduce the burden on landfill that disposable nappies cause.

Says Kim Graham-Nye, co-founder of gNappies: "Grandparents are fast becoming an alternative for childcare due to the increased costs of day-cares and nurseries. Four out of five children receive some care from their grandparents, while five million grandparents spend three days a week caring for them. As most grandparents are retired, the perceived extra time element of using gNappies is not an issue. Most grandparents would love the opportunity to help on an environmental front, most with the future of their grandchild in mind."

gNappies gives the option to choose between disposable nappies or cloth nappies - with the disposable element being a 100% biodegradable gRefill - an insert which is home compostable or can be disposed of in the domestic waste. Home composted in the garden, wet gRefills only takes 50 - 100 days to biodegrade, compared with 500 years in landfill for a single disposable nappy.

Kim and her husband Jason introduced the hybrid nappy concept after discovering shocking facts about disposable nappies and their impact on the environment. Around 11 million disposable nappies enter UK landfill every day, each taking up to 500 years to decompose and accounting for a third of the world's landfill.

Kim added: "The gNappies solution means being environmentally friendly just got easier - and by using gNappies, grandparents can help the environment while making their grandchild a green baby.

gNappies come in a range of colours, patterns and sizes. The dedicated gNappies UK website - www.gnappies.co.uk - features all the products as well as gBundle starter packs.
