Granite Construction Company Helps San Jose Realize an Example of City's Smart, Green Streets

City Integration of San Jose's Green Vision Elements Demonstrates How Everyday Projects Can Be Green; Innovative Project Looks at Sustainable Construction Material for Roads

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - March 14, 2008) - When the Amgen Tour of California rolled into San Jose on February 20 for its Stage 3 Finish with its world-class riders, their high-tech bikes and international support crews, the area surrounding San Jose City Hall was transformed into a temporary cycling village. While there were many colorful and exciting visuals to behold, one of the more significant components to the area was the use of an innovative environmentally sensitive technology.

Prior to the Amgen Tour of California arrival, the City of San Jose teamed with Granite Construction Company to place a test section of 500 tons of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) on the north side of Santa Clara Street in front of City Hall. The area, which guaranteed Tour move-in and move-out ease, serves as a demonstration of how standard city operations, such as paving, can be key to the Green Vision implementation.

According to Dave Donnelly, Branch Manager, of Granite Construction's Bay Area Branch, "Asphalt concrete is one of the construction industry's most recycled material. When repaving roads, Granite Construction Company grinds off the surface, reclaiming the product and then reintroduces 10-to-15 percent of the RAP (Recycled Asphalt Product) back into the production of new asphalt concrete. The method used for this lot, which is increasingly accepted as the industry's 'Green' alternative, is just the beginning as we continue to introduce new recycled materials into the process," Donnelly said. "We applaud San Jose for its Green Vision and taking a lead in implementing significant, environmentally friendly infrastructure changes."

The City of San Jose is interested in further use of RAP in overlay projects as well as crushed/recycled asphalt and concrete for road base. Additionally, working with Granite Construction Company and others in the construction industry, the City is continuing to review the benefits of asphalt rubber (recycled tires), asphalt shingles (roofing waste), pervious concrete and asphalt and permeable/porous landscape products -- which allow water to penetrate the surface. Permeable construction products help slow runoff, reduce stress on the sewer/storm water system and recharge the ground water tables.

"With San Jose's Green Vision, it is our goal to make San Jose streets smarter and environmentally friendly. We want to thank Granite Construction Company and its vendors for supporting this initiative and their donation of labor, equipment and trucking. It is allowing us to test new ways to pave streets with an environmentally friendly material," said Mayor Reed. "It is our hope that projects like this will serve as a test for a large-scale adoption in the future and that we can further procure local green products."
