Great Big Sea Set to Rock the Boat at The Smiling Land Foundation's Third Annual Rockin' Big Give

Renowned Newfoundland Band Returns as Headline Performer for Annual Fundraiser in Toronto on December 4

ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR and TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 7, 2010) - After taking Toronto by storm at the Smiling Land Foundation's first ever Rockin' Big Give in 2008, Great Big Sea is back to headline this year's fundraiser in support of Ronald McDonald House Newfoundland and Labrador. The Newfoundland band will join this year's Honourary Chair, former Chief of Defence Staff for Canadian Forces General Rick Hillier, at Toronto's legendary Masonic Temple for an unparalleled mainland party filled with East Coast flair.

"We can't wait to return to Toronto to show everyone what a REAL party looks like," said Great Big Sea's Alan Doyle. "We are proud to once again partner with the Smiling Land Foundation through its Rockin' Big Give and raise money for the new Ronald McDonald House back home. It will be a great party for a wonderful cause…and the music won't be so bad either."

For over 17 years, Great Big Sea has captivated audiences across Canada and around the world with their unique sound that truly encompasses the energetic spirit of Newfoundland. Sean McCann, Bob Hallett and Alan Doyle started the band in 1993 in an attempt to create a new approach to Newfoundland folk music, one that combined their original music with the traditional sounds and instruments they grew up with. In 2002 and 2003, Great Big Sea added drummer Kris MacFarlane and bass player Murray Foster. The band has just released their tenth studio album, 'Safe Upon the Shore'

"Great East Coast music is central to the success of the Rockin' Big Give and we are ecstatic to welcome Great Big Sea back as our headline performer," said Paul Sparkes, founding member and chairman of the board of the Smiling Land Foundation. "Their sound and spirit will definitely add something special to this year's event."
