Great Lakes Commits $4.5 Million to College Completion Programs

Grants Awarded to Twenty-Eight Programs That Help Students Succeed

MADISON, WI--(Marketwired - Aug 8, 2013) - Students get the best payoff from higher education only when they complete their programs of study. That's why Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation is awarding $4.5 million in College Success grants today. The grants fund 28 programs across Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin that provide specialized help that's known to keep more students enrolled and on track academically, socially, and financially for program completion.

Programs receiving College Success grants will use this funding to provide academic services like tutoring, mentoring, and intensive advising, as well as access to learning communities. Additionally, many College Success grant recipients will offer book vouchers, emergency grants, or other incentives to students who take advantage of program services. By linking participation to incentives designed to help alleviate the extreme financial need of the students they serve, the programs increase the likelihood that students stay enrolled.

These programs will serve more than 4,000 undergraduate students at two-year, four-year, and technical colleges during the 2013-2014 academic year. Programs will focus on those students with the most to gain from higher education -- those from low-income backgrounds, students of color, and those who are first in their family to attend college.

"The programs being funded by this round of College Success grants are providing services proven to help students make progress toward their degree," said Richard D. George, Great Lakes' President and Chief Executive Officer. "Each program has been thoughtfully designed to address the challenges known to keep students from graduating, helping them to develop connections to their campus, peers, faculty, and staff and overcome financial obstacles. We look forward to seeing the impact of each of these programs in helping their students persist towards graduation."
