Great Western Diamonds Corp.: Favourable Drilling Results from Candle Lake C28 Diamond Project

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN--(CCNMatthews - April 6, 2006) - Great Western Diamonds Corp. (TSX VENTURE:GWD):

The Company is pleased to report that it has completed a nine hole drilling program on its 100%-owned C28 Kimberlite in the Candle Lake area of central Saskatchewan. Preliminary drillhole results indicate kimberlite intersections in eight of the nine NQ size (47.6 mm diameter core) drillholes giving 612.6 metres of kimberlite from a total of 2,186 metres drilled. The drilling program extended the kimberlite in all directions and the body is still open to the north and south. Coarse-grained kimberlites have been identified in several of the drill cores as well as an abundance of indicator minerals. A summary of drillhole locations and kimberlite intersections is shown in Table 1. A map showing drillhole locations is available online at the Great Western Diamonds website (www.gwdc.com).

"Thick intersections of kimberlite around a central vent area that contain coarser-grained horizons with abundant indicator minerals indicate a highly prospective phase of kimberlite in C28", says Brent Jellicoe, President of Great Western Diamonds Corp. "Some of our best historical diamond recoveries have come from enriched zones within the C28 body, and this year's drilling has tapped into thicker intervals of this material".

The drillholes were located on a grid spaced between 25 and 100 metres apart with the expectation that continued drilling will ensure a methodical approach to evaluation of the size and shape of the body and provision of representative samples from across the body. The thickest continual intersections of kimberlite were encountered in the central part of the body proximal to an expected deeper-going vent in this area. Deeper drilling on the northern side of the kimberlite (CL28-06-12, CL28-06-16) has identified new kimberlite horizons missed in previous drilling in this area. This may point to other, as yet undiscovered vents. At this early stage of evaluation, at least three different kimberlite units of variable thickness and character have been identified.

Detailed core logging is in progress by a kimberlite expert from Minerals Services Canada Inc. with emphasis on: discriminating kimberlite phases, determining vectors to possible vent locations, selection of samples for indicator mineral analysis, and division of the intersections into suitable sample intervals for diamond recovery. Whole core samples will be submitted to the Saskatchewan Research Council for diamond recovery utilizing caustic dissolution methods. Construction of a geological model for the C28 Kimberlite and a better understanding of the distribution of diamond size and grade will determine the scope of future drilling and sampling programs on this kimberlite.
