Great Western Minerals Group Ltd.: Winter Work Program Underway at Hoidas

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 25, 2006) - The Company (TSX VENTURE:GWG) (OTCBB:GWMGF) is pleased to report that the 2005/2006 winter exploration and development program at the Company's 100%-owned Hoidas Lake rare earth project is underway.

Approximately 2000 metres of core drilling is planned for the JAK Zone and associated parallel structures. Most of the drilling will be concentrated in the northern portion of the JAK Zone where the mineralization widens, the overall grade increases, and there is excellent potential to increase the total resource for the JAK Zone.

Drilling will also test the major geophysical conductor discovered during the summer 2005 program. The conductor is located approximately 500 metres northwest of the JAK Zone and has been traced for over 1500 metres.

Wardrop Engineering Inc. has completed the initial draft of their Resource Model and Technical Report compliant with National Instrument 43-101, on the Hoidas Lake property, and the final report will be completed and released shortly.

Ground geophysics is also continuing with coverage to the south end of Nisikkatch Lake, approximately 6 miles southwest of the JAK Zone, where a number of rare earth showings are known.

Great Western Minerals Group Ltd. is a Saskatchewan-based mineral exploration and development company with interests in advanced stage mineral properties hosting rare earth elements, copper, gold and diamonds (through its subsidiary Great Western Diamonds Corp., TSX-V:GWD). The Company's near-term goal is to become the only vertically integrated supplier of rare earth products in North America through the development of the Hoidas Lake project and the operations of its US Subsidiary, Great Western Technologies Inc.

The rare earth elements are key components in the rechargeable batteries and electric motors used in hybrid vehicles-a target market undergoing rapid growth globally.
