Greater Essex Teacher Wins ETFO Award

Mario Spagnuolo Wins New Teacher Award Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 16, 2005) -
Mario Spagnuolo of the Greater Essex Teacher Local today became the first-ever recipient of the New Teacher of the Year Award, created by the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) last year.

The award recognizes a teacher in the first five years of teaching who has demonstrated exemplary teaching practices, who has been involved within the Union, and who personifies the goals and objectives of ETFO.

"Mario has been a member of ETFO for four years. In that time he has demonstrated the highest commitment to the profession. He is known as an excellent teacher who has high standards for his students and assists them in meeting those standards. He is active within the school community and chooses to participate in a number of extra-curricular activities with students," ETFO President Emily Noble said.

Noble said Mario is a life-long learner who pursues numerous, self-directed professional development opportunities to ensure that he continues to meet the needs of his students. "He is active within his union as well. He has served as steward, a member of the collective bargaining table team, a member of the local executive, a member of the local human rights committee, a member of the local constitution resolutions committee, and a delegate to the ETFO Annual Meeting. Most of the 56,000 members of ETFO don't accomplish this within their entire careers; it is incredible that Mario has done so within his first four years! "she said.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 65,000 elementary public school teachers and education workers across Ontario and is the largest teacher union in Canada outside of Quebec.
