Greater Toronto REALTORS® Offer Scholarships

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 18, 2009) - Greater Toronto REALTORS® will help alleviate the costs of a post secondary education for two graduating high school students this spring.

The Toronto Real Estate Board's third annual Past President's Scholarship will provide two young people with $5,000 each for the next school year at a post secondary institution of their choice.

Scholarships are awarded based on a 500-word essay submission, which is evaluated by a panel of judges.

This year, applicants are invited to compose essays on the following topics:

What initiatives would you like to see embraced by government and real estate developers to help create environmentally conscious communities in the GTA?

How will GTA real estate be impacted by rising energy costs and uncertain international economies?

"REALTORS® make measurable contributions to the community on a regular basis." said TREB President Maureen O'Neill. "In 2008 for example, we were proud to make $165,000 worth of contributions to 19 charitable organizations in GTA through the REALTORS Care Ontario Foundation. TREB's scholarship program is another example of our sincere desire to see others in the community succeed, in this case, young people who hold so much promise for the future."

Last year's recipients Cathleen Brennan and Monika Mahindra are now studying biochemistry at Queen's University and accounting at the University of Waterloo respectively. Their essays explored the impact of grow operations on the community and how building practices can compensate for the effects of global warming.

"It is very encouraging to see that young people recognize the impact that property issues have on society as a whole," said Ms. O'Neill.

The deadline for submissions is April 17, 2009. Full details can be found on TREB's consumer website

High school principals and guidance counselors throughout the GTA can also provide interested applicants with scholarship requirement details.
