Topic: Writing Reliable Multicore Code

Synopsis: Compile-time checking in C/C++ can catch many sources of errors, but there are numerous errors that may cause run-time failures. The multicore environment, with concurrent processors adds another dimension to the development challenge, creating many more ways for code to fail. Many of these failures are unlikely to show up during product testing, and will only show up later as costly product glitches. This class describes the top sources of run time errors in multicore systems and how to avoid them in order to write reliable code.

Synopsis: With ineffective programming, even a perfect compiler cannot generate efficient code. This talk will focus on the hows and whys of programming with today's modern compilers and how to get good performance out of them. Examples will be given to illustrate how simple source code transformations can result in big savings regardless of the compiler used. The talk will cover choice of data types, variable scopes, the restrict keyword, floating-point arithmetic, assembly statements, packing, loop optimizations, and volatile memory.

Synopsis:
Real-time operating systems by definition offer predictable scheduling behavior, but for a safety/security-critical system more is required. One other core function of the operating system must be to separate various elements of the system securely from each other. This course starts by looking at examples of mixed-criticality embedded systems, explores the safety and security interactions of the components in these systems, and then examines the ways real-time operating systems can secure the interactions.
