Green Plains Renewable Energy, Inc. Joins Industry in Launching Advocacy Group

OMAHA, NE--(Marketwire - November 12, 2008) - Ethanol industry leaders, including Green Plains Renewable Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: GPRE), have launched a new advocacy group, Growth Energy, to further educate the public and policy makers about ethanol and how it fits in America's energy future. Wayne Hoovestol, Green Plains' Chief Executive Officer, is a member of Growth Energy's board of directors.

"Growth Energy offers a new forum for promoting the many benefits of ethanol," said Hoovestol. "Ethanol is here now to help this nation achieve energy independence, address climate change and stimulate the economy. Green Plains is committed to working with Growth Energy in building grassroots support for progressive renewable energy policies."

Growth Energy adopted the following mission statement as an expression of the group's goals and agenda:

Growth Energy is a new, proactive group committed to the promise of agriculture and growing America's economy through cleaner, greener energy. Growth Energy members recognize America needs a new ethanol approach. Through smart policy reform and a proactive grassroots campaign, Growth Energy promotes reducing greenhouse gas emissions, expanding the use of ethanol in gasoline, decreasing our dependence on foreign oil, and creating American jobs at home.

At this pivotal time in America's history, we joined together and created Growth Energy because:

-- We believe ethanol is our nation's growth energy, renewable, realistic
    and clean-burning.
-- We believe a strong biofuels industry will create American jobs and
    stimulate economic growth.
-- We believe we can continue creating cleaner and greener fuels through
    21st century technology and innovation.
-- We believe biofuels will stimulate the growth of sustainable
agriculture worldwide, providing crops for both food and fuel.
-- We believe that an energy independent America is achievable and
ethanol is the most important first step to making it a reality.

This is about our energy future. And enhancing our way of life.

"Through Growth Energy, the ethanol industry will speak with a fresh, aggressive voice," said Hoovestol. "We are proud to be a partner in this effort to educate the American public about the advantages of ethanol. We encourage others to participate in Growth Energy's efforts to highlight the importance of homegrown, cleaner, greener, renewable energy sources."

Hoovestol participated in a press conference announcing the formation of Growth Energy at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on November 11, 2008. More information about Growth Energy is available at
