Greenpeace - Liberals sign sweetheart deal with Bruce Power…..

McGuinty Breaks Promise for Debate on Nuclear Power Attention: Environment Editor, Energy Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO/ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 17, 2005) - The McGuinty government has announced another multi-billion dollar sweetheart deal with Bruce Power to rebuild and restart two broken down reactors at the Bruce A nuclear station.

"This is another example of the McGuinty government's duck and cover nuclear energy strategy. Premier McGuinty has made a secret multi-billion-dollar nuclear deal in the back room, when his Energy Minister promised an 'open and public debate' on the future of nuclear power," said Shawn-Patrick Stensil, Energy Greenpeace Canada.

"Premier McGuinty didn't have enough confidence in his nuclear power strategy to have made this billion dollar announcement in his government Throne Speech last week," said Stensil.

"Ontarians will pay for this deal in the decades to come -- thousands more tonnes of radioactive waste; the risk of meltdown- and higher electricity prices. Instead of nuclear power, the McGuinty government should have invested in cheaper, cleaner and safer conservation programs and renewable energy."

"Bruce Power has a sweetheart deal. It profits and doesn't pay its fair share of the nuclear debt, while Ontarians shoulder the long-term the radioactive waste liabilities and reactor decommissioning," said Stensil.
