Gridpoint Systems Joins Carrier Ethernet Ecosystem

Consortium will leverage Gridpoint's traffic engineering expertise to further its mission of ensuring delivery of interoperable scalable Carrier Ethernet solutions

OTTAWA, CANADA--(Marketwire - July 19, 2007) - Gridpoint Systems, the leader in emerging Connection Oriented Carrier Ethernet traffic engineering solutions, today announced that it has joined the Carrier Ethernet Ecosystem spearheaded by Nortel. The ecosystem is a partner framework designed to ensure the interoperability of Provider Backbone Transport (PBT)-enabled Carrier Ethernet solutions worldwide, thereby helping reduce the costs and complexity and increase the scalability of carriers' next generation communication infrastructures.

"We're pleased to join the Carrier Ethernet Ecosystem as service provider interest in PBT, interoperability, and traffic engineering continues to grow," said David King, Gridpoint Systems vice president of marketing and product line management. "This initiative builds on our existing partnerships to evolve and bridge the gap between MPLS and PBT applications and meet new multi-fabric interoperability requirements driven by emerging converged optical Ethernet networks."

Gridpoint's leadership in traffic engineering was demonstrated at NXTcomm 2007, through the introduction the industry's first Connection Oriented Carrier Ethernet traffic engineering application. The Ethernet Path Computation Module (E-PCM) enables the scaling of multi-vendor, multi-technology and multi-domain networks. Spanning both MPLS and PBT environments, the module's powerful algorithms can be used to rapidly deliver optimal path calculations across layer zero through two fabrics.

Recognizing the importance of interoperability and speed to market, the E-PCM is built on a flexible, standards-based, service oriented architecture (SOA). It can be rapidly integrated by telecom equipment manufacturers, network management suppliers, operational support system vendors, and service providers to meet critical traffic engineering and QoS (quality of service) delivery requirements as they evolve.

"We look forward to leveraging Gridpoint's expertise in traffic engineering and service management as we pursue the Ecosystem's mission," said Michael Adams, vice president of Strategy and Architecture for Nortel's Metro Ethernet Networks. "Gridpoint's participation will further advance the goal of providing practical interoperability in a multi-vendor network environment and we welcome their contributions to our partnership."

Gridpoint Systems will be discussing the challenges and opportunities of scaling PBT networks with Ecosystem partners Nortel and Extreme Networks in a Light Reading webinar on July 19, 2007. The webinar entitled "Deploying Provider Ethernet using PBT and PBB: Applications, Interoperability and Operations" provides an overview of target business and residential applications, interoperability with existing solutions and IP/MPLS-based networks, and traffic engineering and service management approaches to ensure network scalability.
