Growth in the Executive Search Profession Continues to Drive Increases in Recruiters' Compensation

PETERBOROUGH, NH -- (MARKET WIRE) -- January 9, 2007 -- Growth in the executive search profession is translating to strong, steady increases in cash compensation for recruiters, according to new research from Kennedy Information, Inc. Giving executive recruiters a sense for their profession's compensation practices, "Compensation in Executive Search: Benchmarks, Trends & Forecasts," Kennedy Information's report on the findings, presents data on base salaries, bonus payouts and commission, and the prevalence of various benefits.

The executive search market segments primarily into two service models, retainer and contingency; the report therefore devotes sections to each, but also remains mindful of an overall evolution in the profession. "An increasing number of executive search firms conduct business as hybrids that are part retainer, part contingency," said report author Brent Skinner. "Our report's methodology at once reflects this evolution in the market and properly assesses the two traditional models."

More than 170 firms participated. Kennedy Information then aggregated the data to compile the findings, which include interviews with high-level professionals who work in executive recruiting.

Less than one-fifth of respondents reported flat or negative compensation change for any position for the time period of late 2004 through 2006, when pay steadily increased for most positions in executive search. The report reveals that total cash compensation for some in this profession can be high; base salaries, however, tend to figure into that mix only marginally, with performance-based pay models typically shoring up the difference.
