Guelph Net Zero Energy Home Opens Doors to Great Public Interest

GUELPH, ON--(Marketwired - September 23, 2015) - Over 400 members of the public showed up at builder Reid's Heritage Homes' grand opening for its newly constructed Net Zero Energy Home this past weekend.

The Net Zero Discovery Home is the first to be completed as part of a national demonstration project to prove that Net Zero homes can be built on a community-level scale. The goal is to make Net Zero Energy homes -- which can produce as much energy as they consume on an annual basis -- fully accessible and affordable to all Canadians.

Reid's Heritage Homes is building five homes as part of this project. Overall, five builders were selected to participate in the national project that will see the construction of at least 25 Net Zero Energy homes in four provinces -- Nova Scotia, Québec, Alberta, and Ontario. This total will almost double the amount of Net Zero Energy homes currently in Canada. The project is funded in part by the ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative (ecoEII), with contributions from each participating builder, industry suppliers and Owens Corning Canada.

Reid's Heritage Homes' first five Net Zero homes are being built in the builder's signature family community of Westminster Woods, located in Guelph, Ontario.

Despite the unpredictable weather, the turnout remained impressive throughout the day with line ups forming at the beginning of the day, due to maximum capacity within the home.

Innovative features of the Net Zero Discovery Home include: advanced heating and cooling capabilities, with a modulated delivery system and floor zoning, provided by Mitsubishi Electric; insulated and airtight design providing an advanced envelope style made possible by the Owens Corning CodeBord Air Barrier system, which significantly reduces air leakage of the home, and triple pane windows by JELD-WEN Windows, for enhanced comfort and insulation while providing noise reduction.

Guests were also enthusiastic to test drive one of two Teslas at the event. Two Tesla representatives were on site to offer information and test drives, and promote the electric vehicles which can be charged using the charger inside the Net Zero Discovery Home garage.

Many visitors were excited to learn that Reid's Heritage Homes' second Net Zero home was recently listed for sale. Those interested can view the listing at LiveNetZero.com/for-sale. The home has 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and offers 1,775 square feet of living space.
