Hall of Fame Partners With Telecom Industry to Launch New Sectoral Research and Development Funding Program for Canadian Universities and Colleges

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 31, 2011) - Canada's Telecommunications Hall of Fame announced today that, working in conjunction with Canadian telecom service providers, it has successfully completed an initial placement of $86,000.00 of research and development (R&D) funding at two Canadian colleges and universities, the first instalments in the Hall of Fame's new Telecom R&D Funding Program.

The initial grants of $60,000.00 to Carleton University's Department of Electronics and $26,587.00 to Algonquin College's Electronics/Electro-Mechanical Studies Department were directed to the two Ottawa-based academic institutions by Nexicom Telecom Inc. and Ontera, through the Hall of Fame's new R&D program, and will be applied to new and on-going telecom research projects.

"The Hall of Fame's new Telecom R&D Funding Program helped us to streamline and simplify the process of directing our company's R&D funds to leading telecom researchers in Canadian colleges and universities as investments in our industry's future," said Paul Downs, President and CEO of Nexicom. "Within a matter of weeks, the Hall of Fame had identified for us several colleges and universities enrolled in their new program, brought us together with leading industry academics conducting high-level telecom research here in Canada, and arranged all the documentation we needed to successfully place our R&D funds."

For Nexicom and Ontera, the Hall of Fame's new R&D Funding Program allowed the companies to satisfy their telecom R&D funding obligations to the federal government under their wireless spectrum licences and secure long-term licence renewals, to build bridges to some of the leading telecom industry student researchers in this country and to drive innovative research that will help to keep the Canadian telecom industry strong in the years to come.

Under the new program, Canadian colleges and universities engaged in telecommunications research register with Canada's Telecommunications Hall of Fame on an annual basis to become eligible to partake in R&D funding provided by Canadian telecom companies wishing to fund all or part of their annual telecom research and development budget through the Hall of Fame's stewardship. Costs incurred by the Hall of Fame in administering the new program are covered through an annual registration fee paid by the academic institutions. No fees are payable by Canadian telecom companies to participate in the Hall of Fame's program, and 100% of the funding committed to Canadian colleges and universities by participating telecom companies flows directly to telecom researchers at participating academic institutions.

"In designing this program under our Hall of Fame's Education Program, it was important that our telecom industry partners understood that their annual R&D spending dollars, whether in whole or even in small part, could be channelled through our program at no cost to them whatsoever, so that every dollar goes to industry research and development in this country," said Lorne Abugov, Hall of Fame founder and director. "Everyone wins under this new program – the industry wins through a simple mechanism to achieve and fulfil their R&D objectives and their government obligations, the academic institutions win from increased levels of funding for high-level telecom R&D and the research students themselves win through research employment opportunities and valuable introductions to prospective industry employers."

Canada's Telecommunications Hall of Fame is committed to ensuring a bright future for this important enabling industry, and it encourages Canadian telecom service companies and Canadian universities and colleges to utilize the Hall of Fame's new Telecom R&D Funding Program to expand telecom R & D in this country and to help our industry develop and attract our next generation of telecommunication leaders.
