Hampton Challenges McGuinty, Tory to Northern Debate

HANMER, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 11, 2007) - NDP Leader Howard Hampton came to visit working families in Hanmer today with a challenge for Dalton McGuinty and John Tory - Hampton wants a leader's debate focused on the priorities of Northern Ontario's working families.

"Dalton McGuinty may have forgotten Northern Ontario working families. New Democrats haven't. That's why I'm throwing down the gauntlet and calling on Mr. McGuinty and John Tory to join me in a debate in a Northern community, a debate that focuses on issues that matter to working families in Northern Ontario," Hampton said.

Hampton made his remarks after holding a roundtable with France Gelinas, the NDP candidate for Nickel Belt and Dave Battaino, the NDP candidate in Sudbury, at which they listened to the concerns of Northern Ontario working families. Northerners are concerned about the loss of good-paying forestry jobs, long health care wait times, the high cost of living and the difficulty finding a job that pays a fair day's wage for a hard day's work.

"Dalton McGuinty promised change for working families in the North. He promised a new era of prosperity for Northern Ontario families, he promised to tackle poverty and to help the families of children with autism. Instead his record has been one of mill closures and job losses, broken promises and disappointment for working families," said Hampton. "Mr. McGuinty's priority is giving himself a $40,000 raise and slush fund money to his friends. New Democrats will stand up for a fair deal for today's working families."
