"Hands Free" Law Goes Into Effect -- Will California Obey Spirit or Letter of the Law?

Headsets Only the Beginning in Aligning "Productivity" and "Safety" While Driving

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - July 1, 2008) - As most California residents well know, the "Hands Free Law" goes into effect across the state on July 1. As of today, if you talk on your cell phone without a headset while driving in California, you can be pulled over and ticketed.

While the law begins to address the problem of keeping hands on the wheel, surprisingly, dialing and texting are still legal under this new California law. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, "the new law does not prohibit dialing, but drivers are strongly urged not to dial while driving."

Using a headset religiously will keep you within the letter of the law, but the spirit of the law is clearly telling us to get serious about safety while behind the wheel. In that sense, headsets are really just the beginning.

While making any sort of call while driving is dangerous, dialing into a conference call from the road is asking for trouble. A conference call -- with lengthy dial in numbers and convoluted passcodes -- is one of the most difficult calls to make, especially while navigating stop and go traffic on the highway.

Mountain View-based startup Vello has developed a technology that dials out to participants when it is time for a call to begin. Stuck in traffic and need to join a meeting? Just answer your phone. Now that is safe and productive.

Launched in September 2007, Vello ends the pain of conference calling. Rather than requiring people to fumble with dial-in numbers and access codes, Vello calls out to meeting participants -- and calls begin on time. To join a call, participants simply answer the phone and press "1." Vello's unique conferencing service enables instant conference calls to unlimited parties from a mobile device as easily as making a single phone call. Instant or pre-scheduled Vello Calls can also be initiated from the desktop through www.myvello.com.

Quotes:

Commented Mark Dzwonczyk, COO and President of Vello, "The idea behind Vello was born out of our own frustration with conference calls. Audio conference calls are one of the most ubiquitous business tools today, and yet they are notoriously inefficient. The dial-in numbers, the lengthy access codes, the five minutes of idle chit chat at the start of every call, waiting for everyone to join -- we've been trained to put up with this inelegant system because there were no alternatives. Vello, with its simple dial-out service, is changing the rules of the game -- and it's about time."

Dzwonczyk went on to say, "Initiating or joining a conference call should not be that difficult -- and certainly should not create a life threatening situation. While Vello was founded to make our overall conferencing lives easier, it is an ideal solution for mobile professionals who are serious about being safe and productive on the road."
