Harper Government Affirms Safety in Vancouver Harbour

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 26, 2012) - The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, was in Vancouver today to provide information about search and rescue assets in Vancouver, clarify misinformation and announce an additional $100,000 annually to enhance the capability of Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue to provide search and rescue services in the Vancouver area.

"Our Government values the partnership between the Canadian Coast Guard and the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue," said Minister Ashfield. "The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue teams provide excellent service to Canadians and this new ongoing funding will allow them to enhance their presence in the Vancouver area."

The Canadian Coast Guard provides annual contributions to the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue and to the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary corporations across Canada to cover certain expenses such as operations, training and administration. This annual contribution also covers insurance for the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue while it is engaged in authorized Search and Rescue operations and activities.

In addition to the new funding for the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, the government will be adding a new Inshore Rescue Boat in a downtown Vancouver location. The Canadian Coast Guard is currently engaging in ongoing discussions for the location for this new service and an announcement on its location will be made at a later date.

"Our government will continue to make decisions and investments that are both operationally sound and fiscally responsible and that put the lives and livelihoods of Canadians first, above all else," said Minister Ashfield.

A new website was also launched today to provide additional information about the network of resources in the Vancouver area along with a myths/facts section to clarify misinformation that has been spread on the reorganization of resources. The website can be found here:
