The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, announced today that the Harper Government has awarded a $2.7 million contract to Heddle Marine Service Incorporated for important refit and maintenance work for the CCGS Griffon. This is the second contract awarded by the Government of Canada to this shipyard in July.

The CCGS Griffon is a high-endurance multi-tasked vessel and light icebreaker based in Prescott, Ontario. This year, the Griffon celebrates its 35th year of service in the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) fleet.

Funding for this project is provided under the Federal Infrastructure Initiative announced in November 2014. Under this initiative, the Canadian Coast Guard received $183 million for repair, life extension, and procurement of vessels and small craft.

Repairing and maintaining existing vessels will ensure CCG continues to deliver marine safety and environmental response capacity for future generations. This work supports Canada's shipbuilding industry, ensuring the best value for Canadian taxpayers.

Quick Facts

- Maintenance work includes the overhaul of the second main engine, bow thruster, and inspection of the main circuit breaker. In addition, the radar system and main switchboard panels will be replaced.

- Work is scheduled to begin in July 2015, and to be completed by September 2015.

- This work ensures the vessel can continue to fulfill mission requirements and operate efficiently.

- This contract is being awarded as part of the $183M investment under the Federal Infrastructure Initiative announced in November 2014.
