Harper Government Highlights Support for Innovative Canadian Businesses

KITCHENER, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 14, 2014) - Today, the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Regional Minister for Southwestern Ontario, addressed the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber of Commerce. The Minister reiterated the Harper Government's commitment to what matters to Canadians-jobs and economic growth-and highlighted the government's Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP). The BCIP helps cutting-edge Canadian businesses get their innovations from the lab to the marketplace. Successful innovations translate into jobs, and jobs lead to prosperity for hard-working Canadians and their families.

Quick Facts

  • The BCIP was launched in 2010 as a pilot program to connect Canadian companies with federal departments and agencies that have a need for innovative products and services.
  • Economic Action Plan 2012 made the program permanent and added a military component.
  • As of September 2014, 156 innovations have been pre-qualified and 77 contracts have been awarded under the BCIP.
  • Over the last three years, on average, small and medium enterprises won over 50 per cent, or close to $6 billion, of the $11 billion worth of procurement contracts awarded annually by Public Works and Government Services Canada to suppliers in Canada.
