Harper Government Invests in Improvements to the Ehattesaht/Chinehkint's Community Infrastructure

ZEBALLOS, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Dec. 17, 2012) - Today, the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Ehattesaht/Chinehkint under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"Our Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities," said the Honourable John Duncan. "By improving facilities such as this, we are helping to boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for Canadians."

Federal funding of $166,750 will help renovate the Ehattesaht/Chinehkint Band Office. These improvements are important for the Ehattesaht/Chinehkint, as the facility is used by all residents for a variety of purposes including community meetings and gatherings, in addition to administration. Project activities will include upgrades to the foundation, structure, roof, windows and doors, plumbing, and heating. The renovations will also supply the facility with the ability to gain internet access.

"Ehattesaht/Chinehkint wishes to thank Western Economic Diversification Canada for supporting our Transformation Project," said Chief Councillor Rose-Ann Billy. "With the Harper Government's support we will be able to repair our band office (improving accessibility, health & safety), to expand our infrastructure (transforming it into a multi-purpose building) and to improve connectivity for our visitors and guests. As an added benefit, jobs will be created for local residents and business will be produced with north island suppliers."

CIIF supports, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure accessible to the public. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
