Harper Government Invests in Black River Harbour

BLACK RIVER, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwired - Sept. 3, 2013) - The Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), Regional Minister for New Brunswick and Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today recognized an important Government of Canada investment in a wharf reconstruction project at Black River Harbour. This project is part of an $8.7 million investment in maintenance, repair, construction and dredging projects at small craft harbours across New Brunswick.

"Our Government is committed to improving small craft harbours in New Brunswick so that individuals employed in our fisheries can continue to earn a living and successfully contribute to the local economy," said Minister Moore. "By investing in small craft harbours our Government is ensuring that those who work in the fishery have safe and functional facilities for years to come."

The wharf reconstruction project at Black River consists of raising the wharf deck elevation. The project will be carried out over two years.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada undertakes these projects in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for local users. Close cooperation between the Department and harbour authorities allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of the commercial fishing industry.

This year, Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Small Craft Harbours Program will undertake repair and maintenance work at core fishing harbours across Canada through an investment of approximately $63 million. This investment will fund over 100 major repair, construction, maintenance and dredging projects at small craft harbours across Canada. In addition, this investment will enable a large number of minor repair and redredging projects to be carried out at fishing harbours throughout the country.
