Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Agassiz's Community Infrastructure

AGASSIZ, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - April 3, 2013) - Today, Mark Strahl, Member of Parliament for Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the District of Kent Fitness Activity Centre under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"By investing in facilities such as this, we are helping to boost economic activity while improving local infrastructure," said MP Strahl. "With today's investment, our Government is demonstrating our commitment to creating jobs, growth and long-term economic prosperity."

The Harper Government's investment of $250,300 will add multi-purpose rooms and improve the energy efficiency of the District of Kent Fitness Activity Centre. These improvements will modernize the facility and give the community more space for hosting events.

"The District of Kent appreciates this contribution from the Government of Canada for our Community Recreation and Cultural Centre expansion project," said Mayor John Van Laerhoven. "Our residents, whether seniors, growing families, youth, or children will be well served by this facility for many years to come. In addition to the new multi-purpose rooms that can host a wide variety of activities, such as fitness classes and cultural activities, the venue will help us continue to build a healthy and socially connected community."

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
