Harper Government Marks Major Investments in Leading-Edge Research Infrastructure

Celebrates the new Stephen Hawking Centre at the Perimeter Institute

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 17, 2009) - The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology and Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario) today joined dozens of participants at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics to celebrate Government of Canada support to this world class facility. The Minister of State spoke at the Institute's Quantum to Cosmos Festival during their 10th anniversary celebrations.

The Government of Canada, through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), has awarded a total of $10 million to the newly named Stephen Hawking Centre at the Perimeter Institute under the Leading Edge Fund, which enables institutions to build on already successful and productive initiatives supported by past CFI investments. The funding will lead to new discoveries and technologies that will keep Canada competitive in the global marketplace.

"Through the CFI and the Knowledge Infrastructure Program, our government is creating leading-edge facilities to attract the best and the brightest researchers and give them access to first-rate equipment and facilities," said Minister of State Goodyear. "Our government understands that these investments provide a significant short-term economic stimulus while making a difference in the lives of Canadians for years to come."

Canada's Economic Action Plan provided an additional $50 million to the Institute for Quantum Computing in Waterloo to build a new world-class research facility.

These investments in Canada's research enterprise will help stimulate the economy by employing the workers to build the labs and equipment needed to conduct cutting-edge research, as well as the technicians and scientists to efficiently run them.
