Harper Government Supports Community Infrastructure in Kaslo, British Columbia

KASLO, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Aug. 20, 2014) - Western Economic Diversification Canada

Today, Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour and for Western Economic Diversification, and Member of Parliament for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, on behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced over $64,000 in federal funding under the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF) in support of infrastructure projects in British Columbia's Southern Interior.

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supported projects that looked to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, and further community and cultural facilities.

Quick Facts

  • An investment of $46,950 made to the Kaslo Arena has enabled them to upgrade the concession, seal the building, purchase two condensers and retrofit the change rooms.

  • At the Langham Building, an investment of $17,354 has enabled upgrades to the washrooms, replacement of various doors, as well as provided a safer handicap access to the building.

  • During the winter months, the Kaslo and District Arena becomes the focus of many families in the community. From toddlers to Old-timers hockey, the ice welcomes just about everyone in the town of Kaslo.

  • The Langham Cultural Centre Society manages the Langham Building which opened in 1896 as a hotel. Since 1974, the building is used as a cultural arts centre for the community of Kaslo.

Quotes

"By supporting improvements to community facilities such as the Kaslo Arena and the Langham Building, our Government is boosting economic growth while providing safe and accessible facilities for the years ahead."

- Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour and for Western Economic Diversification

"The Kaslo and District Arena Association is pleased to announce a partnership with the Government of Canada to replace the chiller, and do some much needed upgrades to emergency exits and weatherproofing at the Kaslo Arena. Without the generous support of the Government of Canada, small rural communities, like Kaslo, find it increasingly harder to keep their valuable assets running efficiently. With these upgrades, we can continue to provide a vibrant recreational centre for users of all ages."

- Joe Johnston, President of Kaslo District Arena Association
