Harper Government Supports Community Infrastructure in Vancouver

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - July 22, 2014) - Western Economic Diversification Canada

Today, Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour and for Western Economic Diversification, and Member of Parliament for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, on behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced $608,995 in federal funding under the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF) in support of infrastructure projects in Vancouver, BC.

The funding went towards improvements to three facilities: Thunderbird Stadium, Jericho Park Pier, and Harold Wright field.

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supported projects that looked to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.

Quick Facts

  • The renovations to the Jericho Park Pier are expected to increase the number of visitors to the facility each year and improve its safety.

  • The Harold Wright Field is used by the Canadian National Men's and Women's Field Hockey Teams, the UBC varsity teams, the Vancouver Women's Field Hockey League, the Greater Vancouver Men's League and summer youth camps.

  • The UBC Thunderbird Stadium upgrades will modernize and enhance the public facility.

"I am proud to see Vancouver benefit from our Government's support for key community facilities. By making these investments in local infrastructure, we are creating jobs, economic growth and supporting the prosperity of the community for years to come."

  • Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour and for Western Economic Diversification

"We are delighted to have the financial support of Western Economic Diversification Canada. With the Community Infrastructure Improvement funding, UBC upgraded the lighting infrastructure at Thunderbird Stadium with 68 new energy efficient fixtures. The new system illuminates the field beautifully while significantly reducing the stadium's energy consumption. The new lights will ensure our students, athletes and community can continue to enjoy one of our many first-class athletic facilities, while helping to reduce campus energy demand."

  • Louise Cowin, Vice President, Students, UBC

"The Vancouver Hawks Field Hockey Club is very grateful for the funding received from Western Economic Diversification Canada to upgrade the field at Harold Wright Park. The funding allowed completion of a world-class field hockey facility that is home to our national teams, UBC varsity athletes and a diverse range of club community programs."

  • Ian MacKenzie, President of the Vancouver Hawks Field Hockey Club

"Jericho Pier is a feature of the City's western beaches, popular for fishing, picnics, views and sunsets. We are very pleased to have received funding to complete the first phase of its rehabilitation. Thanks to Western Economic Diversification Canada for their generous investment in our beautiful park system."

  • Aaron Jasper, Vancouver Park Board Chair
