Harper Government Supports International Collaboration to Counter Violent Extremism

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 27, 2013) - Today, the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, addressed the Symposium on Measuring the Effectiveness of Countering Violent Extremism Programming, organized by Public Safety Canada in collaboration with the Global Counter-terrorism Forum.

"Our Government is committed to keeping our streets and communities safe," said Minister Toews. "Over the past several years, global conflicts and the causes that drive terrorism have continued to evolve. Canada's Counter-terrorism Strategy emphasizes the importance of collaboration with international partners, law enforcement and intelligence agencies, governments, industry, and civil society."

International cooperation on counter-terrorism initiatives is a key component of Canada's Counter-terrorism Strategy. The symposium is an opportunity for international partners and experts to share expertise on programming to counter violent extremism.

Minister Toews also emphasized the importance of research into counter-terrorism, outreach to communities, and ultimately, ensuring that Government efforts and investments are effective.

"Our Government is investing $10 million dollars over five years in the Kanishka Project - an initiative that will invest in research on pressing questions to inform more effective policies for preventing and countering terrorism and extremism," added Minister Toews. "Government support for research and program evaluation is key to better understanding the threat and ensuring that local actors have effective tools and support they need to promote positive outcomes in their communities."
