Harper Government Supports Inuit Economic Development With Investment in Nunavik BioSciences Inc.

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Jan. 17, 2012) - Parliamentary Secretary Greg Rickford, on behalf of the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, the Honourable John Duncan, and the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, the Honourable Denis Lebel, announced today a Government of Canada comprehensive financial contribution to Nunavik BioSciences Inc., owned by Makivik Corporation. Parliamentary Secretary Rickford is in Montreal meeting with Aboriginal stakeholders in the economy as part of the government's coast-to-coast pre-budget consultation.

"Our Government of Canada is pleased to support the progress of an enterprise that is developing the resources of the North and Inuit know-how," said Mr. Rickford. "Community economic development is a priority for our Government, and I applaud Makivik Corporation for its commitment to such innovative and inspiring projects."

"By participating in projects like that of Nunavik BioSciences, which improve living conditions and economic prospects for Inuit communities, the Government of Canada is demonstrating its staunch commitment to advancing the economy and prosperity of Northern Quebec communities," stated Minister Lebel.

"We were pleased to find out over six years ago that our algae in Nunavik could be used for many different purposes, one of which pertains to bio-cosmetics. By supporting the development and marketing efforts of Nunavik BioSciences, we continue to provide economic benefits to our communities. We thank the Government of Canada for their continued support in this project," said Mr. Pita Aatami, President of Makivik Corporation.

Nunavik BioSciences Inc. will provide employment and training opportunities for Inuit, as well as a stable and attractive environment for the community and investors alike.
