Harper Government to Focus on Economy and Delivering Results as Parliament Returns

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Jan. 27, 2014) - Today, the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, and the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, welcomed the return of Parliament and set out the Government's priorities in the House of Commons in 2014.

"The Harper Government's top priorities will continue to be those that matter to Canadians - jobs, growth and long-term prosperity," said Minister Van Loan. "The cornerstone of our agenda in Parliament will be the Budget. Canadians can count on our Government to build upon our strong record of creating jobs, keeping taxes low and returning to budgetary balance."

In addition to the Budget, the Government will be hard at work fulfilling last fall's Throne Speech commitments, focusing on legislation that will create jobs and opportunities for Canadian, support and protect families, and put Canada first. Minister Van Loan highlighted legislation that will:

  • open new markets for Canadian goods;
  • create a Victims' Bill of Rights;
  • protect our children from high-risk child predators; and
  • strengthen the value of Canadian Citizenship;

"We will also continue to work on legislation to make our communities stronger and families more secure by putting the rights of victims first," added Minister Lebel. "This includes final work on the Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act, which ensures public safety is paramount in determining how people found not criminally responsible should be addressed by mental health review boards and courts."

"We take pride in our Government's ability to run a productive, hard-working and orderly Parliament," concluded Minister Van Loan. "It is part of what has allowed us to continue to deliver results for all Canadians, including a record-setting performance in 2013 which saw 40 bills receive Royal Assent."
