Harper's Wrong on Jobs: Layton

New Democrat campaign targets northern Ontario ridings

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 9, 2008) - At a town hall meeting with voters hard hit by the jobs crisis in northern Ontario, New Democrat Leader Jack Layton directed a blistering attack at Stephen Harper for failing to stand up for hard-working families.

"Working families are the last priority of Stephen Harper. He promised you and your family that he'd fight to protect your jobs - he didn't. Instead, Harper boasts that he has handed out $50 billion in corporate tax giveaways to the very companies that have laid you off and moved your job overseas. That's not the right leadership," said Layton.

Canada has lost nearly 400,000 jobs in the last 6 years alone, including 111,000 in forestry and hundreds of thousands in manufacturing.

New Democrats are targeting every riding in northern Ontario in this election.

"I'll stop tax cuts for companies who don't need them, or who ship your jobs overseas and instead I'll invest that money in companies that provide training, and are innovating in the new energy economy and creating green collar jobs," said Layton.
"It's time for a Prime Minister who puts the concerns of working families first," said Layton. "With your support, I'll be that Prime Minister."
