Hartsfield-Jackson Lets Customers Scan Their Way to Savings

An Industry First, Quick Response Codes Debut in Atlanta's Airport

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwire - Apr 19, 2011) - A new technology that debuted today at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will give passengers instant access to savings via their smartphones at some of the Airport's leading shops and restaurants. Hartsfield-Jackson is the first airport to offer this customer enhancement.

During a news conference today, Airport officials rolled out a new concessions promotional program that uses quick response (QR) codes to offer food, beverage and retail discounts to passengers. The QR codes are printed on more than 30 advertising dioramas throughout the Airport.

"This is an exciting way to let passengers know about all the shops, restaurants and services the Airport offers," said Arnaldo Ruiz, assistant general manager for Commercial Development and Customer Service. "Leveraging this technology is also environmentally friendly because it allows us to offer discounts while eliminating the traditional option of printing coupons."

Popular in Japan and South Korea, QR codes are two-dimensional bar codes containing information that is scanned and read with smartphones. The QR codes the Airport is using contain a URL link to a new webpage of concessions offers.

When scanned, the QR codes direct passengers to the Airport's mobile website,, where they will find downloadable discount coupons for InMotion Entertainment, BlackBerry from Wireless Giant, Savannah's Candy Kitchen and others. The mobile site also includes Airport maps and a store/restaurant locator.

Smartphones require a downloadable application to read QR codes.

QR codes also could be used at the Airport to help with wayfinding or to provide additional information about art installations or concessions.
