Hastings Entertainment Incorporated: Veteran Jockey Pedro Alvarado Inching Up in Standings

Winners All Around: Hastings Customers on a Roll

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 2, 2009) - Pedro Alvarado longs for the day he repeats as leading jockey at Hastings Racecourse and lately he's been showing signs of accomplishing that very goal.

Alvarado, who turns 44 in August, road three more winners on Sunday (May 31) to make it 17 on the season. Fernando Perez leads with 24, followed by Frank Fuentes (20) and Mario Gutierrez (18). Alvarado was the leading rider at Hastings four out of five seasons before young Gutierrez came on the scene and won the title in 2007 and 2008.

"I feel good and strong," Alvarado says. "Maybe this will be the year of a comeback for me." His winning mounts Sunday were on Tenoch ($9.40), McArthur ($5.10) and Galahad ($4.90).

There were several winners at Hastings on the weekend. While racing patrons were pulling in big numbers wagering Saturday, a Burnaby resident was hitting a jackpot of another kind in the adjacent Hastings Gaming Floor.

Josefina Datayan was the lucky winner of a 2009 Porsche Boxstar in a Race To Win Mystery Hit, sending a buzz throughout the facility that was equal to Peter Elliott's $124,965.93. BC Gold Mystery Hit earlier in the week. The record for a BC Gold Mystery Hit at Hastings stands at $198,736.49, won by Mrs. Gemma Risi of East Vancouver in February.

At track level Saturday there were two four-figure Triactors on the tote board when Dave Wilson rode Holy Mack ($18.30) to victory in the 5th race that resulted in a $5,424.10 payout and Keveh Nicholls guided Bearempire ($17.50) to the winner's circle in the 8th race for a $1,374.90 Triactor win. The winning numbers in the 5th race were 3-6-5 and in the 6th the winning combination was 1-9-4.

The largest payout at Hastings Racecourse so far this season was a winning Superfecta bonanza of more than $253,000 wagered on the Kentucky Derby on May 2.

Friday Night Live racing cards beging June 5 at Hastings with a start time of 7:00 p.m. and live entertainment throughout the evening with a DJ entertaining from the Granville Island Brewing Beer Garden. It is the start of a 16-week Friday Night Live program that runs through September 5.
